Houston, We Have a Problem

NASA uses duct tape to get out of a tight situation.

In 1970, the square carbon dioxide filters from Apollo 13's failed command module had to be modified to fit round receptacles in the lunar module. The lunar module was being used as a lifeboat after an explosion en route to the moon. A workaround was made using duct tape and other items on board Apollo 13, with the ground crew relaying directions to the spacecraft and its crew. The lunar module CO2 scrubbers started working again, saving the lives of the three astronauts on board.

Keith Canfield, who designed the scrubber modification in just two days, said later that he knew the problem was solvable when it was confirmed that duct tape was on the spacecraft: "I felt like we were home free" he said in 2005. "One thing a Southern boy will never say is, 'I don't think duct tape will fix it.'"

Is it Duct Tape or Duck Tape?

The origin of the name and whether we should call the adhesive duct tape or duck tape seems to still be a mystery. Some say that the first adhesive was made out of cotton duck and the term was coined by the soldiers in WWII because their tents and ponchos and other field items were made from cotton duck. Others say it is named duck tape because it has the same properties of a duck's plumage as being water tight.

Others say that the original term was duct tape and that the sound of duck tape and duct tape became intermixed and that there is no backing to the WWII story. There is also a company named Duck Products.

Who knows, all we do know is that it temporary fixes many things. Duct tape gets most people out of a bad situation. It usually does the trick on almost any instance whered two or more items need to come together. Duct tape also saves the day as a temporary fix for any type of leak. The next time that comfy, old armchair gets a tear, don't throw it out, just use duct tape.
